Route map: Midtown Down to the Village
A Google My Maps embed drops in here. Until then, follow the numbered stops below, they are written so the route works without a live map.
Overview
New York rewards a walk that goes somewhere, not a loop. This one runs south through the middle of Manhattan, from the grandeur of Grand Central down through Midtown, past the Flatiron, and into the tighter, older streets of Greenwich Village.
It is a longer route than most first-day walks, closer to four hours with stops, but almost all of it is flat sidewalk and there are subway stations along the way if your legs give out early.
By the end you will feel the change in the city's grain, wide avenues and tall buildings up top, human-scaled brownstones and angled streets down in the Village. That contrast is one of the best things about Manhattan and it is hard to appreciate from a subway car.
Good for a first full day, ideally after a decent night's sleep since it covers real distance.
The route
Each stop gives you the direction from the previous one, what to look at, a practical tip and roughly how long to stay.
Direction
Start inside the main concourse, under the painted ceiling.
What to see
A beaux-arts train terminal with a vast, star-mapped ceiling above the main hall. Still a working station, so it is busy with commuters most of the day.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Exit onto 42nd Street and walk west about 500 m.
What to see
A small, tidy park behind the New York Public Library, with lawn chairs, a carousel, and food kiosks depending on the season.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
The main branch fronts Fifth Avenue right beside the park.
What to see
Two stone lions guard the entrance, nicknamed Patience and Fortitude. The reading room upstairs is open to the public and worth a quiet look if you have ten spare minutes.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Head south on Fifth Avenue, then cut to Broadway around 34th Street, roughly 1.3 km total.
What to see
Fifth Avenue's storefronts give way to the base of the Empire State Building, one of the most recognisable skylines markers anywhere, best appreciated from street level looking straight up.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Detour one block east onto 32nd Street.
What to see
A dense one-block strip of Korean restaurants and karaoke bars, a good, fast lunch option roughly halfway through the walk.
Time here: 30 min

Direction
Continue south on Broadway for about 1.1 km to 23rd Street.
What to see
A narrow, triangular building from 1902 that still looks strange and modern against the surrounding blocks. The small plaza in front is the best place to take it in.
Time here: 15 min

Keep heading south on Broadway for roughly 600 m.
What to see
A large open square that hosts a genuine farmers market several days a week, plus skaters and street performers most afternoons.
Time here: 20 min
Direction
Walk south-west on Broadway for about 700 m to 12th Street.

A famous independent bookstore with, by its own count, 18 miles of shelving. Even a quick pass through the ground floor is worth it for book lovers.
Time here: 20 min
Direction
Continue south for about 500 m until the marble arch appears ahead.
What to see
The unofficial heart of Greenwich Village and NYU's campus edge, with a large arch, a central fountain, and usually a street musician or two playing nearby.
