Overview
What this walk is like
Cape Town does not do subtle views. Table Mountain looms over everything, and this walk is built to give you as many angles on it as possible while climbing the lower slopes of Signal Hill, its smaller neighbour.
The route starts in the coloured houses of Bo-Kaap, climbs through quiet upper-city streets, and finishes on the open grassy summit road of Signal Hill, looking down at the harbour, Robben Island and, on a clear evening, the whole curve of the Atlantic coastline.
It's a genuine uphill walk for most of its length, though nothing technical, just sustained. The path is paved or gravel the entire way, so no scrambling is required, but the sun here is strong and the gradient will get your heart rate up.
Good for most fitness levels with time to spare. Not ideal in high wind, which the Cape is famous for, since some of the open sections on Signal Hill offer no shelter at all.

Small things that change the walk
This route gains close to 200 metres in elevation, budget extra time if you're not used to sustained inclines.
The Cape sun is stronger than it feels, wear sunscreen and a hat even on overcast days.
Carry more water than you think you need, there are no shops or fountains once you leave Bo-Kaap.
Wind on Signal Hill can be sudden and strong, bring a windbreaker even in summer.
There's no shade for the last third of the walk, plan around the midday heat if visiting outside sunset hours.
Getting down from Signal Hill after dark is easier by car or taxi than on foot, arrange a ride in advance if you're staying for sunset.
