Overview
What this walk is like
San Francisco rewards anyone who doesn't mind a hill, and this route asks for three of them. It links Nob Hill, Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill, three of the steepest and most photographed climbs in the city, each ending in a view that explains why people put up with the incline.
Expect real gradients here, not gentle slopes. Some streets tip past 20 percent and the sidewalks are built with little ridges just to help your shoes grip. It is worth it. The payoff is bay views, bridge views, and a look down streets so steep that cars park sideways.
This is best done on a clear morning, since the marine layer often rolls in by mid-afternoon and can erase the bay entirely from some of these lookouts. Bring layers, because the wind on Telegraph Hill can be sharp even on a warm day downtown.
Good for fit walkers and photographers. Less good for anyone with hip or knee issues, since the descents are as steep as the climbs.

Time here: 20 min
8
Coit Tower base, Telegraph Hill

Continue up the steps to the top of the hill and the tower plaza.
What to see
A 1930s tower crowning the hill, with murals inside and, from the surrounding plaza alone, a 360-degree view over downtown, the bay, and both bridges on a clear day.

Time here: 25 min
Before you go
Small things that change the walk
This walk has real elevation gain, over 200 metres across three hills, pace yourself and rest on the flatter stretches.
Wear shoes with proper tread. Several sidewalks here are built on genuine inclines and get slick when foggy.
Carry water, cafes are sparse on the residential hill stretches between Nob Hill and North Beach.
Bring a light jacket even in summer, the wind off the bay is stronger and colder than downtown suggests.
Go before early afternoon if you want clear bridge views, the fog often rolls in and hides everything by 3pm.
Sunscreen matters on the open steps and hilltop plazas, there's very little shade.
