Route map: First Steps Through the Old City
A Google My Maps embed drops in here. Until then, follow the numbered stops below, they are written so the route works without a live map.
Overview
Istanbul's old city packs an unusual amount into a small area, and this walk is built around that: two enormous former imperial landmarks facing each other across a square, a covered market a short walk away, and a quiet park to finish.
The route stays mostly flat and well signposted, so it is a forgiving first walk even with luggage-lag legs. It does not go inside either major landmark, since both deserve a proper visit on a day when you can plan around queues and opening hours.
Istanbul mixes call to prayer, tram bells, and market noise constantly, which can feel like a lot on arrival. This walk gives you a first taste of that rhythm in small, manageable doses.
Suits any first-time visitor, and works equally well solo or in a group since most stops have space to linger.
The route
Each stop gives you the direction from the previous one, what to look at, a practical tip and roughly how long to stay.
Direction
Start in the open square between the two great domes, with the fountain in the middle.
What to see
The historic heart of the old city, with the Blue Mosque on one side and the Hagia Sophia on the other, both visible from a single spot.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Walk into the mosque's outer courtyard, a short distance across the square.
What to see
Six slender minarets and a cascade of domes make this one of the most recognisable skylines in the city. The courtyard itself is open and free to enter outside prayer times.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Cross back through the square to the long strip of monuments on the west side.
What to see
The site of the old Byzantine chariot racing track, now a public promenade with an Egyptian obelisk, a bronze serpent column, and other ancient monuments still standing in their original spots.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Walk back east across the square, about 200 m.
What to see
Nearly 1500 years old, built as a cathedral, later a mosque, briefly a museum, and a mosque again, the building's layered history is visible in its patched domes and mismatched minarets.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Head a short distance north-west, about 150 m, to the unassuming entrance building.
What to see
An underground Byzantine water reservoir supported by hundreds of columns, atmospheric even from the entrance hall if you decide to skip going inside.
Time here: 10 min

Direction
Walk north-west along the old main street for roughly 900 m.
What to see
The historic route of the old imperial road, now lined with tea houses, small shops, and tram tracks running down the middle.
Time here: 15 min
Direction
Enter through one of the main gates at the end of Divan Yolu.
What to see
One of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, a maze of thousands of shops selling everything from lamps to textiles under vaulted ceilings.
Time here: 40 min
Direction
Retrace toward Sultanahmet, then continue past Hagia Sophia's north side for about 500 m to the park gate.
What to see
A former outer garden of Topkapi Palace, now a shaded public park with tea gardens, benches, and a slower pace than anywhere else on this route.
